| Danny Schechter, "The News Dissector" is an Emmy Award-winning television producer and independent filmmaker who also writes and speaks about media issues. He is the executive editor and blogger-in-chief of the MediaChannel.org, the world's largest online media issues network. Schechter is co-founder and executive producer of Globalvision, a New York-based television and film production company, where he's made 25 documentaries and co-produced 156 editions of the award-winning series "South Africa Now" and "Rights & Wrongs: Human Rights Television" with Charlayne Hunter-Gault. His most recent films are "Barack Obama, People's President," an inside look at the grassroots and Internet campaign that put Obama in the White House, and "In Debt We Trust," one of the first films to expose subprime lending, credit card abuses, and warn of the financial crisis. He followed up with the book PLUNDER: Investigating Our Economic Calamity, the first book to analyze the current financial crisis. He frequently comments on economic and media issues on radio and TV. Schechter is the recipient of many awards, including two National News Emmy awards, two regional Emmys, a National Headliner award, the George Orwell Award, and the Society for Professional Journalists award for an investigative documentary. He has reported from 56 countries and lectured at many schools and universities. Schechter is the author of many books. His writing has appeared in leading newspapers and magazines including The Nation, Newsday, Boston Globe, Columbia Journalism Review, Media Studies Journal, Detroit Free Press, The Village Voice, Tikkun, Z, and many others. A Cornell University graduate, Schechter received his Master's degree from the London School of Economics, and an honorary doctorate from Fitchburg College. He was a Nieman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard. |
